The JV Hawks football team was one minute away from being 2-0 this season. Instead, a late touchdown by Southfield High School ruined any chance of the powerful JV Hawks team from having an undefeated season.
12-7 was the final score in the JV Hawks home game loss to Southfield on Aug. 31. But Harrison dominated for most of the contest.
``It was frustrating for us because we felt like we dominated in the first half,’’ said Harrison JV Head Coach Joe Pesci. ``We had some great opportunities to score, but didn’t. At the end, Southfield made one more big play than we did.’’
The game was intense and it has quickly become a big rivalry between the two schools. Pesci said there were high emotions as some of the Hawks players have friends and relatives who play on the Southfield team. Both defenses had strong games, causing fumbles and quarterback sacks.
The Hawks had an excellent scoring opportunity in the first half with a first and goal in Southfield territory. But the Hawks weren’t able to punch the ball in. Still, the Hawks scored later on a tailback run to take a first half lead to the locker room 7-6.
No more scoring occurred until about 55 seconds left in the game when Southfield pulled out a big touchdown play and went ahead 12-7.
``We had 55 seconds left and 2 timeouts, so we had enough time to get down and win the game. We got the ball at the 45 yard line and had good field position, but we couldn’t get it in,’’ Pesci said. ``We definitely had a chance to win.’’
Pesci said while it was disappointing to lose, he said the Hawks played well – especially the defense.
``In the second half we started wearing down their line,’’ Pesci said. ``Our defense did a great job for a majority of the game.’’
Some standouts for the Hawks included Adrian Carter, Ventura Ingram, and Jordan Austin.
``Adrian Carter – a freshman -- did an outstanding job at DB and also running the ball. Ingram had several big catches at split end and he played really hard,’’ said Pesci. ``Our linebacker Jordan Austin was flying all over the place and played very well.’’
The JV Hawks team will try to rebound from the loss when they take on Stoney Creek High School this week at Stoney Creek. The Hawks are now 1-1.
