In a magical football season, the Farmington Harrison Hawks JV team showed it had a few tricks up its sleeve last week against Southfield-Lathrup.
Down by 4 points in the fourth quarter the Hawks scored 23 unanswered points to beat the Chargers 35-16 and take over a share of first place in their division.
But the win wasn’t easy. While the Hawks scored first in the game on a touchdown run, Southfield-Lathrup stormed back and had a 16-6 halftime lead.
Southfield Lathrup’s last touchdown, with a minute left in the half, came on a play that was nearly intercepted by a Hawks player. The Hawks’ safety jumped for a long pass and had the ball in his hands, but it was stripped away by a Lathrup player, who walked the ball into the end zone.
``Our body language coming off the field at halftime was not good,’’ said JV football Head Coach Joe Pesci of his Hawks team. ``They came off the field like we were beaten.’’
But Pesci’s locker room speech at halftime motivated the young players, who came back strong in the third and fourth quarters.
``I attribute our comeback to this team growing as players and learning what Harrison football is all about. Unfortunately in this game it just took the team until the second half to get going,’’ Pesci said.
Once the Hawks team got going, the high-powered offense and stifling defense didn’t stop.
The Hawks had over 200 yards rushing for the second straight game, this time on 23 rushes. Hawks quarterback Robert Powell had over 70 yards passing in the game and showed even more improvement in his position.
``Robert Powell is getting better every week. He threw some balls that showed some very good signs of things to come,’’ Pesci said.
Like in previous weeks, the Hawks had big plays again that pushed them into the end zone, Pesci said. Running back Jordan Austin had a solid game again, scoring his last touchdown on an incredible 50-yard rushing play.
``We’re certainly much better on offense from where we were at the start of the season,’’ Pesci said. ``Our defense shut them down, too, especially in that second half.’’
Top performers for the Hawks offensively against Lathrup included Robert Powell, Todd Moore, Adrian Carter, Peyton Petersen, Quinton Jackson, Jordan Austin and RaQuan Carter. Defensive standouts were Colby Nance, Pat Williams and Paul Ghafari.
The JV Hawks are now 4-1 and tied for first place with Stoney Creek, Southfield High, and Southfield-Lathrup. The Hawks hope to keep their winning ways going today when they take on Oak Park High School.
