OXFORD – The JV Hawks football team exploded for almost 500 yards of offense last Thursday in a 34-6 thrashing of Oxford High School.
The Hawks (3-1) used big play after big play to crush the Oxford team’s defense, using both its passing and running game to score big in the rout.
It also was the first time ever that the Hawks team played on Oxford’s new ``blue field,’’ which is one of the few blue football fields in the nation – made famous first by Boise State University.
``We came out and just overwhelmed them with our team speed,’’ said Harrison JV football Head Coach Joe Pesci.
And overwhelmed the Hawks did. Harrison racked up 230 yards in passing from the quarterback and 240 yards rushing from its running backs.
``It was nice to have balance on the offense. The running backs have definitely gotten better and the quarterback position is improving,’’ Pesci said. ``We really had running back by committee in this game. There were 5 or 6 guys who ran the ball. It’s a nice luxury to have. All of them were doing a great job.’’
Pesci also said that sophomore quarterback Robert Powell is improving every week.
``He has tremendous potential for the next year. We’re just getting him ready for the varsity level,’’Pesci said.
Powell launched some big plays for the Hawks, pegging Ventura Ingram in the first quarter for a 50-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 Hawks. Powell also made another huge 65-yard pass in the second quarter for the Hawks that ended up at Oxford’s 2 yard line. Running back Jordan Austin punched the ball in on the next play.
Powell also hit Davon Cook for a monster touchdown pass just before half time to make the score 28-0.
``The previous three games we only had a couple big plays each game. But for us it was just a matter of time before we started getting the big plays. Having five or six like that in one game with 20-yard-plus gains is the kind of plays that you want to get,’’ Pesci said.
``Our offense was very good. But our defense also overwhelmed the running game and they really couldn’t get anything going, Pesci said. ``Also our offensive line did a great job on their blocks and creating holes for the backs.’’
Pesci said one highlight was playing on Oxford’s blue football field.
``The kids went out there and they thought it was the greatest thing they’d ever seen,’’ Pesci said. ``The team had an extra jump in their step and everyone wanted to get in the game just to say they played on the blue turf.’’
Special standouts for the Hawks included quarterback Powell, Ventura Ingram, who scored a touchdown and had an interception, Davon Cook, who added a touchdown, and Peyton Petersen, who had an interception.
The Hawks will try to improve to 4-1 today when they take on undefeated Southfield Lathrup High School.
