The temperature was hot, but the Farmington Harrison Hawks Freshman football team was even hotter, scorching Roseville High School 26-0 in the first game of the 2011 season on Wednesday.
Despite hot, windy, humid conditions on the field at Roseville High School, the Hawks stopped Roseville’s offensive attack with a crushing defense to secure the shutout.
The Hawks offense was just too overpowering for Roseville as running back Chris Jones scored two touchdowns, a 2-point conversion and he ran for nearly 100 yards in his high school debut.
``Our defense played real well. Our defensive ends and linebackers played very well,’’ said Harrison freshman head coach Eric Johnson. ``Their turnovers definitely gave us a short field to work with on offense and that helped us a lot.’’
The Hawks defense caused Roseville to turn the ball over several times, which resulted in two touchdowns for Harrison. The defense also racked up several quarterback sacks and pummeled Roseville’s passing and ground game, limiting the team to less than 100 yards on offense.
Roseville’s first possession ended in a blocked punt by the Hawks, who ended up with decent field position. A few minutes later, the Hawks gave its offense its first good scoring chance after forcing a fumble at Roseville’s 12 yard line. Jones ran the ball in from the 11 yard line on the second play from scrimmage to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead.
A few minutes later, the Hawks forced another fumble and recovered the ball at Roseville’s 37 yard line. This time, running back Jones ran for 37 yards to make it 12-0 in favor of Harrison. Jones also added a 2-point conversion for the Hawks. Jordan Higgs also added a touchdown for the Hawks.
Coach Johnson said while the Hawks scored 26 points, his offense was a little sluggish in its first game.
``Offensively we were slow. The field also wasn’t in the best condition. The grass was high, but we also didn’t block as well as we should on offense,’’ Johnson said. ``This was a good experience for our players though. For many of them, it was the first time they played in a real game on the big field.
The freshman team next will take on Southfield at home at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31.
