Players on the Rochester Stoney Creek JV football team hadn’t lost a game in three years -- until they met the Farmington Harrison JV football team last week.
The JV Hawks handed the Cougars its first loss of the season 13-12 with some big defense, big plays and big hits. It was an impressive win for the Hawks team, who had to do it on Stoney Creek’s home turf.
``We learned after the game that the boys on the Stoney Creek team hadn’t lost a game since the seventh grade,’’ said Harrison JV Head Coach Joe Pesci. ``Knowing that made our win even better.’’
Stoney Creek started off the scoring early, running the ball on the opening kickoff about 60 yards. The Cougars missed the extra point to make it 6-0. But the Hawks defense came alive after that, stopping drive after drive and causing several fumbles.
``Our defense was flying to the ball and punishing their ball carrier,’’ Pesci said. ``We had some really hard hits defensively and knocked their best player out of the game.’’
Pesci added that Stoney Creek’s running backs just weren’t used to being tackled by such a hard hitting team as the Hawks.
He said Harrison offensively had some success moving the ball down the field. But turnovers became a problem as rain poured at Cougar stadium.
After scoring on the opening kickoff, Stoney Creek fumbled on it first play from scrimmage. Hawks player Patrick Williams knocked the ball loose from the quarterback and teammate Mike Robinson picked it up and ran 30 yards for a touchdown.
An offensive gem for the Hawks was when freshman Adrian Carter had a huge 50-yard run that ended at Stoney Creek’s 2 yard line. The Hawks ended up scoring, going ahead 13-6 at halftime.
``After that score, we had far too many turnovers. We kept trading possessions with Stoney Creek,’’ Pesci said.
Stoney Creek did add another touchdown in the third quarter to make it 13-12, but the Hawks defense was too overpowering for the Cougars as they shut the home team down. The final drive for Stoney Creek began at its own 30 yard line. But the Harrison defense caused a quarterback sack and the Cougars were left flailing with three straight incomplete passes to end the game.
Pesci said that standouts for the Hawks included Kieran Ronan, who had about a half dozen huge hits on defense, Patrick Williams, Mike Robinson, Adrian Carter, Jordan Austin – who played superbly at linebacker – Colby Nance, Todd Moore and Chris Williams-Watkins.
He added that the JV team is looking strong and hopefully ready to win out for the rest of the season.
``We want the kids now to sustain the enthusiasm that we have on this team,’’ Pesci said. ``We’re getting these kids to learn what it takes to play Harrison football and what it takes to win. We’re putting it all together and we like the talent that we have. Certainly there’s a lot of talent on this team that will help the varsity next year.’’
The Hawks travel to Oxford High School today where they will play on one of the few blue football fields in the nation – made famous first by Boise State University. The Hawks are now 2-1 and hope to add another victory today.
